And live will cause you to have some focus. You don't have the butterflies in your stomach. You know it, if you pre-tape something as if it is live, you make mistakes. And the surprises in live or sometimes good and sometimes not good. If you're doing a traditional newscast, you know what it's going to be like. Can you explain to folks, Brandon, the magic of live TV? Either you really love it or you loathe it.īRANDON HENEHAN: Live is just magical. And I think, the polarized world we're in, that's tougher to do all the time.ĬATHY WURZER: So we so you've created this smorgasbord, this eclectic show, that has lasted for almost 40 years. We have to present opinions and draw things out. And, of course, we can't do that in public broadcasting, radio or TV. And even viewers and listeners say that they want to hear the news from their perspective. That's just me, though.īRANDON HENEHAN: I think, in many ways, they're increasingly hard to do because the world is so hyperpartisan and people are locked down in positions. What's your philosophy on that?ĬATHY WURZER: To do. Personally, as one of your hosts, I find the political debates the hardest, though. And we wanted it to be obligatory, but not boring.īRANDON HENEHAN: So we worked on that boring part, at least.ĬATHY WURZER: Well, you really have, because you can careen from having legislative leaders on at the top of the show to a live dairy cow in studio to a political panel on one show. And there was a sense that Friday night on public broadcasting was kind of boring and obligatory. My boss, Bill Hanley, the cocreator with me of Almanac, pushed really hard. How much pushback did you get?īRANDON HENEHAN: A fair amount. So it was kind of a tough sell, as you can imagine.ĬATHY WURZER: I could only imagine it was a tough sell. And we knew we needed to do that in an hour and not a half hour. We wanted to have some fun along the way. Journalists would sit around a table.īRANDON HENEHAN: It was all serious, important stuff, and we wanted to do something different. It was a lot like many PBS stations at the time, a Washington Week in Review kind of a format. Now the show that used to hold down Friday nights on Twin Cities PBS was like classic public television- our serious conversation about Minnesota politics, hosted by a buttoned-up guy in a suit.īRANDON HENEHAN: It was a half-hour program. I have no right to have had the career I've had.ĬATHY WURZER: I know. And I had the great fortune of working next to someone who didn't really want to do much of their job, and so I started doing it, and you know, right place at the right time. And instead I ended up working for Twin Cities Public Television, then known as Channel 2. And they were confused what to do with me. I'd moved here during recession from Michigan. The McKnight Foundation had a program for people who were chronically unemployed, and I qualified. So what the heck happened? Look at you.īRANDON HENEHAN: Yeah, I totally stumbled into this business. And being a television producer was not on your bucket list when you got here to the Twin Cities decades ago. I usually see you in a very well-lit studio, so it's a little different here.ĬATHY WURZER: You, my friend, are a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Welcome to my little dark studio here.īRANDON HENEHAN: It was kind of fun to see you in this space. Now before the show fades to black tomorrow night, I thought it would be nice to get Brendan into my radio studio for an exit interview. Governor Wallace has declared that tomorrow is Brandon Henehan day in the state of Minnesota because tomorrow night, after about 1,700 shows, Brandon, TPT's managing director of public affairs and Almanac's executive producer, is retiring. Brendan Henehan is the brains behind one of the longest running public affairs shows in the country. Today, you're going to meet a guy who has produced a live television program every week for 40 years. The people who do the work, the producers, are folks never hear or see. CATHY WURZER: Very few people understand the immense amount of work it takes to put a live broadcast on the air- radio or TV.

The song, filled with droning bass, technologically enhanced vocals, and tastefully varied drum sounds, drops the “jam band” pretense, hits the club, and heads straight for the dance floor to show the people, in no uncertain terms, who’s in charge of this place right here. The new track follows previous 2022 singles “ Lake Shore Drive“, “ Evolve“, and “ M1“.Įven among a collection of tracks seemingly geared toward the electronic end of the band’s stylistic spectrum, “Who’s in Charge” has a notable house music tilt. I loved that concert and think these are some of the best musicians I have ever seen perform live. They were a band that is clearly in love with music of all kinds and it showed in that performance. The audience at times did not know what to think, they found themselves in awe of their amazing musical talent, but it was not a song you could really move around to so they just stood there, slack jawed.Įventually people started to clap along to the faster songs and showed their love for the band this way. The vocals were perfect for the genre and the lyrics were both fun and funny while being intriguing and interesting at the same time. The guitar and bass had amazing riffs that made you sit up and take notice of both individually each time they played. The drum solos were excellent and some of the best I have ever heard in my entire life. It was coined in the mid-70s, before most people ever heard of Ecstasy. Scream Factory’s Double Feature Blu-Ray release of ‘Vampire’s Kiss’ & ’High Spirits’ doesn’t include too much in the way of bonus content. These are both very solid 2.0 Stereo DTS-HD MA soundtracks and easily the best these two movies have sounded yet. Even while other activity may be occurring simultaneously, the dialogue is always more than audible and no issues could be found on my end. Both of these lossless stereo soundtracks are more than sufficient options for these two comedic horror gems, the music, action-oriented activity and dialogue all sound crisp, clean and spot-on, better than I would have imagined. The Blu-Ray release includes a lossless 2.0 stereo DTS-HD Master Audio Soundtrack for both films. There is some definite grain, pops and other miniscule artifacts noticeable on screen, but nothing so drastic as to affect the overall viewing experience in any way and for the most part both movies look quite impressive and fans should be very pleased with these high definition video presentations which are easily the best these two 80’s classics have ever looked. The video presentation looks pretty decent on both titles and hold somewhat surprisingly high bitrates, quite a pleasant surprise considering both the age of the films and the fact that the release includes two feature films on one Blu-Ray disc. Scream Factory’s Double Feature Blu-Ray release of ‘Vampire’s Kiss’ & ’High Spirits’ features a full 1080p High Definition presentation utilizing the original 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio for both films. For those of you (such as myself) that haven’t had the pleasure of this little 80’s gem, I would highly recommend checking it out and fans of the film will surely enjoy finally being able to own it on Blu-Ray. I’m a little shocked that I wasn’t previously aware of it, especially considering it was written and directed by notable filmmaker Neil Jordan (Interview with the Vampire, Byzantium) and features an impressive cast including the likes of Peter O’Toole, Daryl Hannah, Steve Guttenberg, Peter Gallagher, Beverly D’Angelo, Jennifer Tilly, Liam Neeson and more. ‘High Spirits’ was a film that I had no previous knowledge of prior to this Double Feature Blu-Ray release arriving at my house and I found it to be quite a pleasant treat of a supernatural, romantic comedy of sorts. Fans of the film will surely be pretty excited to see it finally arrive home in High Definition on Blu-Ray for the first time and for those who haven’t seen the film before, I can’t imagine a better way to experience it for the first time it’s definitely a pretty fun little ride that’s well worth a watch if you ask me. While many are of the opinion that his over the top performance is nothing more than bad acting, for those who really pay attention (and listening to the audio commentary certainly doesn’t hurt) it becomes understandable that this really was the point, that these over the top, wild moments by Cage are intended as part of ‘the joke’ and even some moments (such as his ridiculous run) were nothing more than goofing off behind the scenes that ended up making it into the final cut. ‘Vampire’s Kiss’ is probably best known for its zany and over the top performance by Nicolas Cage. Sink your teeth into a pair of fangtastic vampire comedies, Love At First Bite and Once Bitten, on Februfor the first time on Blu-ray! Vampire’s Kiss & High Spirits (Double Feature) Hit the jump for our full review of both these Double Feature Blu-Ray releases if you haven’t already closed the browser window and headed off to pick up your own copies. The first Double Feature release includes Nicolas Cage in ‘Vampire’s Kiss’ along with Steve Guttenberg in ‘High Spirits’, while the second Double Feature release consists of George Hamilton in ‘Love at First Bite’ paired with a young Jim Carrey in ‘Once Bitten’, all four finally arriving home on Blu-Ray. Get ready for plenty of laughs along with a few thrills as Scream Factory unleashes four cult classic Horror Comedies from the 70’s & 80’s in glorious high definition in the form of two new Double Feature Blu-Ray releases. Now, for the first time, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is brought to life in a stunning 3D interactive app. Care for your very own Very Hungry Caterpillar!Įric Carle’s much-loved character, The Very Hungry Caterpillar™, has won the hearts of millions of children around the world for more than 45 years. These lines seem to contradict that notion: Some say this is a song about a couple who endured through hardship. The closing lines, in fact, talk about broken hearts, dreams running dry and the older generation passing on. The hope-filled lyrics of the first verse (“We were ring-around-the-rosy children/They were circles around the sun/Never give up, never slow down/Never grow old, never ever die young”) and second verse do not make a comeback in this song. What’s clear, at least from a surface level, is that everything is hunky dorky in this song until bad things started to happen. There’s more than meets the eye to “Never Die Young” by James Taylor. “Forever Young” by Rod Stewart, A Song About Growing Up (Or Not) That certainly reflects TMBG’s enduring career in some ways too.īut whether you were an “insider” or “outsider” as a youth, maybe you can find yourself in this song. The challenge is in being told that you’re an outsider. While that may be the case, there seems to be a deeper meaning – one where the reference to “youth culture” starts to make more sense.įlansburgh once shared about the idea of insiders and outsiders and said that there’s nothing painful about being an outsider. Flansburgh once said he wrote it as a tribute to his dog Iggy. That is part of their esthetic, however, and I think they like it that way.Īs with all TMBG songs, different comments have been made about “Youth Culture Killed My Dog”. Their songs are impossibly catchy while being quirky and oftentimes difficult to interpret. They Might Be Giants represents the unique and eccentric collaboration between bandmates guitarist John Flansburgh and keyboardist John Linnell. It's okay to maintain a childlike attitude. “Well, when I’m lyin’ in my bed at night/I don’t want to grow up/Nothing ever seems to turn out right/I don’t want to grow up/How do you move in a world of fog/That’s always changing things?/Makes me wish that I could be a dog/Well, when I see the price that you pay/I don’t want to grow up/I don’t ever want to be that way/I don’t want to grow up.” Plainly, it’s a song about how things can get more complex in adulthood. Tom Waits’ “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” doesn’t have any hidden meanings. While it’s always a good idea to be responsible for yourself, you can still take a childlike (note: not childish) approach to your life. Most people assume that growing up is a necessity and an inevitability. And, if you had parents that cared for you, you probably didn’t have a lot of responsibilities growing up.
